  Charleston Southern has dismissed football coach Autry Denson after four seasons at the Championship Subdivision school. Buccaneers athletic director Jeff Barber announced Monday that Denson's contract would not be renewed. Denson, a former Notre Dame running back and assistant, went 14-22 in four years and 11-11 in Big South Conference play. The Buccaneers finished this season 2-8, ending with a 20-10 loss at North Carolina A&T on Saturday. Denson was on Brian Kelly's staff with the Fighting Irish when he accepted the job at Charleston Southern, Denson's first head coaching position in college. Barber thanked Denson in a statement for his "great service and effort" to the school and the football program. The school said a national search for Denson's replacement will start immediately. Defensive coordinator Zane Vance will serve as interim head coach until a new coach is selected. - AP College Football

  JD Moore scored two touchdowns, Charleston Southern scored the game's first 20 points, and the Buccaneers defeated Robert Morris 34-21 on Saturday. Moore scored on a 3-yard run in the first quarter and his 29-yard touchdown run after an interception by Anton Williams gave the Buccaneers a 27-14 lead in the third quarter. The interception and 31-yard scoring drive came shortly after an 81-yard pick-6 by Cosey Scarebrook drew Robert Morris within 20-14. Tony Bartalo's 11-yard touchdown run gave the Buccaneers (2-7, 2-2 Big South) a 34-14 lead early in the fourth quarter. Moore finished with 88 yards on 16 carries. Zach Tanner completed 16 of 31 passes for 242 yards with two touchdowns and an interception for Robert Morris (0-9, 0-4). The Colonials were held to 14 yards net rushing. - AP College Football

  2022 PRESEASON ALL-BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE TEAM (COACHES/MEDIA): WR Cayden Jordan, R-Jr., Charleston Southern,...Jordan is back in the fold as a redshirt junior wide receiver for head coach Autry Denson's troops in 2022. He's one of just four offensive returning starters and the top-returning ball catcher with 53 grabs for a team-high 752 yards last fall. His yardage ranks as the ninth-best single-season total in program history, while he was one reception shy of entering the single-season Top-10 list. In his 2021 All-Big South Second Team campaign, he posted a pair of 100-yard receiving games with 152 yards on six catches against Hampton before tacking on 134 yards on a single-game career-best nine grabs, including his lone touchdown, against Campbell. The conference recognized one player per position on the squad after the initial team was revealed. He's coming off a campaign in which he finished with 27 tackles, including six for loss and five sacks, second among his teammates and tops for those returning. He had six tackles in the home opener against Monmouth, one game after all five of his stops in the season opener at The Citadel were solo.   2021 ALL-BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE SECOND-TEAM (COCHES/MEDIA): LS - Ethan Ray, Gr., Charleston Southern,...Ray was instrumental in getting the ball to the holder's hands for a 29-of-29 effort on point-after touchdown kicks this fall. Sam Babbush was 24-of-24 on his kicks, while Nathaniel Toole converted all five of his tries. Additionally, the Buccaneers were 3-of-3 on two-point conversions, all pass attempts. Jack Chambers completed two of the tosses, to Garris Schwarting and Ja'Rell Smith, while Schwarting connected on a pass to Kyris Barnett for the other. Ray also was credited with four tackles throughout the campaign. He recorded two in the Big South opener against Monmouth before adding another pair in the regular-season finale at FBS No. 1 Georgia. The Boiling Springs, South Carolina, product collects his third overall All-Big South accolade, including a first-team nod (2019) and second-team selection (2018). He posted a career-best tying 2.0 sacks (for a loss of 18 yards) among his three tackles in the home league finale against North Carolina A&T for his most in a game since 2019. The Marianna, Florida, native added a tackle for loss in the season opener at The Citadel, against Monmouth in the Big South opener and at Gardner-Webb in the league finale. He was credited with a season-high six tackles against Monmouth, one week after a five-tackle (all solo) performance at The Citadel.

In limited action at FBS No. 1 Georgia in the regular-season finale, he tallied two tackles. He closed the campaign with 16.5 career sacks, ranking fourth in school history. The 96 tackles moved him into a 10th-place tie on the school's single-season chart. He had a career-high 16 tackles in a pair of conference matchups, against Hampton and against Campbell.

Among his stops when facing the Camels were 11 solo tackles. The 16 tackles were the most by any Charleston Southern player since 2018. The Simpsonville, South Carolina, product added 12 tackles against Monmouth in the league opener and also at Robert Morris, which was the first of back-to-back contests with nine solo stops. He picked off his first career pass against Campbell and added another one in the regular-season finale at FBS No. 1 Georgia, halting the Bulldogs' opening possession after only four plays. He sparked an unofficially school-record tying 98-yard drive against Hampton with consecutive catches of 43 and 39 yards to start the possession, helping CSU to a touchdown in only five plays. The Tampa, Florida, native collected at least three grabs in nine of the 10 regular-season games and sprinted for a season-long 68-yarder at Gardner-Webb in the Big South finale.   SEPT 13 BIG SOUTH OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Charleston Southern wide receiver Garris Schwarting (Bamberg, S.C.) caught six passes for 151 yards and four touchdowns - tying the Big South single-game record, and threw a 6-yard TD to account for all five of CSU's touchdowns in the Buccaneers' 38-21 season-opening win at The Citadel. He sparked a 21-0 first quarter lead first with a 23-yard TD catch, followed by his touchdown pass and lastly with a 27-yard touchdown grab. Schwarting scored on a 69-yard pass play in the third period, and capped the game's scoring with a 24-yard touchdown reception with 5:08 remaining in the game. He was named the CFPA FCS National Performer of the Week Sunday for his effort.   Charleston Southern is suspending its 2020 football season. The school is part of the Division I Big South Conference and competes in the Football Championship Subdivision. The Big South and the NCAA have canceled its plans for a fall championship, although the league did let member institutions play non-conference games if they wanted in the fall.
